It was an early Sunday morning, when rest of India was asleep but Banaras was up with zeal and enthusiasm. The occasion was of cleanliness drive that was part of Cleanathon initiative of NDTV in association with Dettol, PVCHR and Sunbeam Education Group at one of the most prominent places of Banaras, the Assi Ghat. Students of Little Heaven English School, Pt. Ramadhar Polytechnic, Scion Public School, Children Academy, Sacred Heart Public School, A.O Muslim Girls Inter College, Little Flower House and Uday Pratap College along with the nearby residents and villagers of Banaras created high voltage atmosphere on the banks of river Ganga.
PVCHR and Sunbeam Institutions pioneered the Banaras phase of Cleanathon initiative by involving all the stake holders of Assi Ghat and created the awareness about the necessity and importance of cleanliness and hygiene for the sustainable environment. Under the guidance of Dr. Lenin Raghuvanshi and Smt. Shruti Naghvanshi and with coordination of PVCHR volunteers the event generated mass awareness and tons of mud was removed from the banks of holy Ganga with help of the students from various educational institutions and residents of nearby villages and various communities. The event was also graced by renowned Sarod Maestro Pandit Vikash Maharaj and Tabla Maestro Prabhash Maharaj, who were present at Assi Ghat to support PVCHR and NDTV for their cleanliness drive. Several prominent leaders of regional organisations like Anand Tiwari, Father Anand, Dr. Mohd. Arif, Idrish Ansari and Shailendra Kumar Singh extended their support to PVCHR and were present at the occasion. The event witnessed some scintillating performances by the students of Sunbeam Institutions. The artists of Ghasiya tribe a community from Raup village of Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh where 18 children died of hunger a few years ago were set to perform Karma dance on this occasion. The crowd was eager to see these children Ghasiya tribe perform, however the rain played spoiled sport and these gems from Raup village could not show case their talent to the crowd. Meanwhile, while interacting with Kamal Khan, Senior Journalist of NDTV, Dr. Lenin Raghuvanshi CEO and Founder of PVCHR quoted “To begin with, cleanliness should be practised, this practise will later become a habit and this habit will then transform into necessity and eventually India would be a cleaner and better place to dwell in.” Dr. Lenin has also proposed to request the restaurant and hotel owners and their association to lend the used soaps by their guests to the under privileged people of remote villages of Banaras who cannot afford to purchase soaps to maintain their personal hygiene. Dr. Lenin believes that these small steps will contribute in a big way to ensure better cleanliness and sanitation practices in rural parts of India.
Cleanliness is next to Godliness and this initiative of NDTV in association with Dettol and PVCHR at Assi Ghat was highly acknowledged and appreciated not only by the nearby residents but also by the tourists present on the occasion of Cleanthon.
